Myanmar Ambassador Urges UN Action Against Forced Youth Recruitment by Military Council
Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun urgently appealed for international intervention to halt the forced enlistment of Myanmar’s youth into the military by the military council. Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting titled “Promoting Conflict Prevention – Empowering All Actors Including Women and Youth” on March 13 in New York City, he highlighted the situation in Myanmar.
He denounced the military dictatorship’s exploitation of Burmese youths, using them as human shields against emerging revolutionary forces or as porters to carry loads, rather than for national defense. This forced conscription, along with the ongoing humanitarian crisis, he warned, it could lead to serious regional repercussions. He stressed that the National Unity Government and the people have been left with no choice but to resist since early February.
The ambassador emphasized that Myanmar is not under threat of invasion by any foreign power; rather, it is the terrorist military dictatorship and their inhumane brutality that are causing immense suffering to the Burmese people. He highlighted the urgent need to end the forced enlistment, which is putting Myanmar’s youth at grave risk.
U Kyaw Moe Tun conveyed the desperate plea of the Burmese people to the United Nations, questioning its role in saving lives. He urged the Security Council to take effective measures to protect the people of Myanmar, emphasizing that condemnation alone is not enough. He called for immediate action to stop the loss of innocent lives and prevent further atrocities by the military regime.
